Choosing A Professional Career Path As A Millennial

Choosing A Professional Career Path As A Millennial Millions of millennials, those who were born since 1980, are in the midst of paving their professional paths. They are choosing careers, earning their educations, and deciding which direction their career path will take. What millennials care about when it comes to choosing a professional path differs somewhat from prior generations. According to Gallup, nearly 60 percent of millennials find work-life balance to be crucial, and they believe it’s important to have a job that promotes their well being. “As millennials, we want to make a difference in the world and we want to enjoy what we spend our time doing,” explains Jamie Wright, a renowned millennial lawyer and political pundit. “We are a generation that largely values experiences over things we can purchase, and our career is an experience that is important to us.” Defining well being, Gallup found that what is most important to millennial career seekers includes liking what you do and having a sense of purpose. Jamie is one of those millennials who can relate, and shares these tips for choosing a professional career path: Determine your passions. Experiment with some jobs and hobbies to see what type of career gets you excited. While you may not always completely follow your passion when choosing a career, it’s a good idea to make sure you enjoy what you will spend your career doing. Look beyond demographics. Don’t worry about who has historically dominated the field. That shouldn’t stop anyone from going forward and seeking a career in a particular field. Just because men or women have always done a particular job doesn’t mean that you can’t change that. Get the skills you need. It takes training and experience to become an expert at something. Put the time in to get the education and training that you need to go forward. Seek out successful professionals to network with. Whether they are in the same field or not, you can learn a lot from them. If you can find a mentor in the field, be sure to take advantage of all you can learn from that person. Avoid being caught up by challenges. If a challenge arises, find a solution to find your way around it. For every problem, there is a solution that you can use to find your way around it. Then keep going. See challenges as a test of your commitment to reaching your goals. Be realistic. Realize that no matter what career path you decide on, you will start somewhere near the bottom. Don’t let that bring you down. See it as a stepping stone and start using what you learn there to move on up the ladder. Become a positive thinker. If you have been a pessimist in the past, now is the time to leave that behind and start using the laws of attraction to help bring you the things you want. Focus on being positive and striving to reach your goals. “Choosing a career path and seeing it through is a challenging and exciting time of your life,” added Wright. “There are so many possibilities and options, you just need to decide what you want to do and start marching toward it. It’s well worth it and you will be happy once you get there.” About Jamie Wright Jamie Wright is a millennial attorney who specializes in millennial issues, government affairs, crisis communication, and conflict resolution, among other areas. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, she practices law in Los Angeles. She is also a partner in the Millennial Government Affairs group, and is a political pundit and crisis communications expert. Wright has used her own advice on how to reach success by making her way to being a partner in the Los Angeles-based Millennial Government Affairs group. She is also considered a millennial expert, specializing in such areas as crisis communication, conflict resolution, and government affairs. Not only does she also help political hopefuls by helping them to keep their strategies and campaigns legally compliant, but she’s also won a most influential under 40 award. In addition to a law degree, Wright holds a master’s degree in history and enjoys weighing in on millennial issues. She frequently speaks on millennial-related topics as an expert in the field. 3 Reasons It Is Important To Use Sunscreen When Traveling -

3 Reasons It Is Important To Use Sunscreen When Traveling - As the summer quickly approaches, many people rush to the cosmetic stores to grab a bottle of sunscreen lotion. Considering its benefits, sunscreen application should never be restricted to one season. Dermatologists recommend that you should apply this cream almost daily to guarantee the best results. These three sunscreen benefits will make you reconsider your thoughts on how best to apply it. Shields You From the UV Rays The continual depletion of the ozone layer puts humanity at a higher risk of exposure to the harmful UV rays than ever before. In one of its key roles, sunscreen protects your skin from the two harmful forms of UV rays in UVA and UVB. That UVA rays can easily penetrate glass implies that you are exposed to them even when traveling. UVB rays, on the other hand, may not pass through glass but they are commonly associated with sunburns. The worst part of it is that the two forms of UV radiation can cause cancer and this is why you should make your screen protection from such rays a top priority. Whether you are dark skinned or have a lighter skin complexion, skin cancer is non-discriminatory and can be diagnosed for any skin type, age, or gender. You ought to wear sunscreen daily to alleviate the effects of carcinogenic radiation. However, as it turns out, there is no difference when onboard a plane. The windows of a plane may be small, but you are closer to the ozone layer while up there. You will need credible brands such as a Beauty Counter sunscreen as opposed to a generic department store brand along with some skin moisturizers. Prevents Premature Aging Everybody loves a younger-looking and radiant skin. Developing wrinkles is normal. This is the normal aging process. However, premature aging would be worrying. This is one of the most important reasons to start applying sunscreen. It does more than just shielding you from the UV radiation. It protects your skin from developing signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. Several studies have documented how individuals below 55 years who used sunscreen lowered their chances of developing premature aging signs by up to 24% compared to the occasional and non-sunscreen users. By wearing sunscreen, you are greatly lowering your chances of developing wrinkles and leathery skin. Protects Your Skin From the Sunburns Anybody who has had sunburns in the past will attest how the unpleasant red, burning skin can be. This is one of the complications you will want to avoid by wearing your sunscreen. Sunburns act by weakening your skin and subjecting it to more bruises. As a result, your skin may suffer from swelling, redness, itching, repeated attacks, and hives. Recurring sunburns are known to heighten the risk of melanoma. However, the good thing is, it takes no effort to stay safe because all you need to do is to apply sunscreen.

How NOT to Handle Being Fired

How NOT to Handle Being Fired Getting fired is never going to be a pleasant experience, but by handling it badly youre only going to do more damage and its really not worth getting yourself worked up over. Its natural that you will feel disappointed or angry, however by taking a positive outlook, itll be much easier for you to move onto something new. The way you react to being let off and exit a company can have an effect on the future of your career, so its important that you do it as gracefully as possible. After all, its likely that you want to continue working in the industry and are going to cross paths with your ex employer or colleagues, so you dont want to do anything you might regret. Although its easier said than done, here are a few things that you really should avoid doing after being fired. 1) Dont make a scene Whether you expected it or not, its likely that youd be upset at the news that you have lost your job, but try not to react badly or do anything irrational. Sometimes its hard to act rationally when emotions are running high, but you dont want to act impulsively and end up burning bridges. 2) Dont vent on social media The worst thing you can do is have an outburst on social media. Its a small world and you never know who could read it and who knows who. Youre likely to say something in the heat of the moment that you may regret later and by that point youve broadcast it to hundreds of people! 3) Dont feel  disheartened Feeling sorry for yourself will get you nowhere. Yes youve just been let go from your current job, but that doesnt mean you wont find another one, maybe even a better one! If things dont happen as quickly as hoped, dont feel disheartened. By thinking positively, you will come across as a more positive and forward thinking individual who employers are more likely to want to hire. 4) Dont spend a week in your underpants When unemployed, you may feel like you  dont really have anything important  to get out of bed for each day, so its easy to let your routine slip. Spending your days lounging around in your PJs may be the comfiest option, but chances are your whole mindset will relax and youll lose productivity. By setting your alarm for a decent time and getting up and dressed each day you will automatically be in a better frame of mine to be proactive in your job search. 5) Dont lie about it When looking for a new job, its likely that prospective employers will want to know why you left your last job. In this situation you really shouldnt lie about it, as they may wish to conduct a background check. Unless you were fired for something horrendous, the best thing to do usually is to be honest  about it. 6) Don’t compare yourself to other people A lot of us are guilty of comparing ourselves to others, especially with social media becoming so integrated into daily life. By doing this youre only going to make yourself feel worse and youre not going to achieve anything from it. Success comes to those who work for it, so get out there and do just that! Dream Job Overload When Doing Work You Love Leads to Burnout

Dream Job Overload When Doing Work You Love Leads to Burnout Stress.  It’s the number one cause of health-related issues in the US. And the number one cause of stress for most Americans?  You guessed it WORK! (according to NIOSH.) Recently a listener to my SIRIUSXM radio show contacted me to share her concerns about stress and work.  Mary Anne Cowen, a nationally-certified massage therapist, is trained and experienced in helping others de-stress.  Yet she found herself falling prey to burnout. According to Mary Anne, (and I agree) having your dream job involves recognizing your stressors and setting boundaries so they don’t overtake you. Read below for Mary Anne’s story of how she made her dream job sustainable by saying no to others and yes to herself…I thought, I can’t do this anymore.  I had just lost my beloved 17 year old Jack Russell Terrier Auggie. The last 6 months of caring for Auggie had left an already depleted body, mind and spirit completely empty. I was in a job that I hated. I felt my life was in a downward spira l.  That’s when an article on massage therapy caught my eye quite by accident. I thought, “that’s something I can do!” I researched and called the two schools in my state that taught massage therapy. One called back. I went to visit the school and everything in my core was saying do this! I listened and went on to operate a successful private practice for 10 years.  However, during that time I didn’t learn how to say no to helping others de-stress and unfortunately worked (and stressed) myself into the ground.  Yes, the massage therapist burned out.  I closed my practice, not knowing what I was going to do.  After some time off, I reflected back and realized that I had to say yes to myself. By that I meant take care of my mind, body and spirit.   I soul searched further, asking myself questions likes the ones Maggie poses on her radio show: What do I know? What are my skills? What’s my passion? (That came directly from Maggie when I called in…seriously.)  I kept co ming back to massage Therapy.  That was when I got a call from someone offering me another job as a massage therapist.  I took the leap to go back to doing work I love but it’s different this time. The company I work for may push my limits with client load but I have learned to say no respectfully yet assertively.  Getting my own stress under control has been liberating.   I’m even  re-opening my private practice aptly titled: My Balanced Blend Massage. What’s different? I’ve learned to say no to others and yes to myself! Though she condensed her story for us here, Mary Anne’s career journey has taken her through the better part of the last 15 years.  She says that journey helped her realize that she needed to be her own boss and trust her own instincts.  Though she still cares about providing great client service her whole approach to business is different and exciting because it’s sustainable and not stressful. If you’re one of the many Americans finding work st ressful, tune into my radio show this Friday (Sept 24th, 2010) 4p ET/1p PT on SIRIUS 112/XM 157.  I’m joined by work life fit expert Cali Yost.  Call in at 866-675-6675 with your questions.  Cali will share actionable strategies for getting the flexible schedule and time freedom you need to have a career AND A LIFE. Mary Anne will weigh in with her comments and you can too!(Photo courtesy of Alan Cleaver.)
